About Brisbane

Brisbane the capital of Queensland State of Australia is the most populous city of the state and also the third most populous state in Australia. The metropolitan area itself comprises of approximate 20 million Brisbanites also known as ‘BrisVegans’ in popular culture. The central business district is located on a bend of the river Brisbane from which it derives its name.

The metropolitan region of the city extends along the floodplains of the river from the Moreton bay to the Great Dividing Range. Brisbane is surrounded by Moreton Bay, Ipswich, Somerset, Logan and the Redland Areas. In 1859 after Queensland separated from New South Wales and was established as a separate colony, Brisbane was made its capital. The city played a pivotal role as the South West Pacific headquarters in the Allied campaign during the Second World War. It has played host for many cultural and sporting events like the 1982 Commonwealth Games, World Expo ’88 and the last Goodwill Games of 2001. It was classified as a Gamma World City Plus in 2008 by the Loughborough University. It was rated as the 16th livable city in the world by the Economist in the year 2009. The city has preserved a few heritage buildings dating to the 19th century.  The city has announced plans to bid for the 2024 Olympic Games.

Geography and Climate

Brisbane is located in the southeast region of Queensland. The major part of the city of Brisbane is hilly. There are many hills littered across the city including Mount Petrie and the Mount Gravatt. The city has suffered two major floods in 1893 and also in 1974. Suburban creeks intersect the city resulting in the high tendency of floods. The city has a hot and humid subtropical climate with temperatures often crossing 40 degree Celsius in summers.

Economy and Tourism

Brisbane‘s economy is based on both executive and working class industries. White collar jobs are available in the sectors of I.T., financial services, education sector and public sector administration. Working class jobs are available in petroleum refining, stevedoring, paper milling, metalworking and QR railway workshops. Home grown business also form an important part of its economy, while some of the popular ones include Flight Centre , Boeing Australia and Donut King. Brisbane has the fourth highest average household income at $ 40,973. The Port of Brisbane is located on the lower reaches of the Brisbane River and is the 3rd most important port on the basis of value of goods. Container freight, sugar, grain and coal being the major export goods. Retail also forms a major part of the economy and there are many shopping centers located in the suburban area of the city which are Wintergarden, Broadway on the mall, Queensplaza and the Myer Centre among others.

Tourism plays a major role in Brisbane‘s economy. It is the third most popular destination after Sydney and Melbourne in international tourism. Popular tourist spots include the South Bank Parklands, the Roma Street Parklands and the City Botanic Gardens among others. The city received 4.6 million domestic visitors and 0.9 million international visitors in the year 2008.
